Nanyang Piano Academy

Overview

The Nanyang Piano Academy 2019 (NPA2019) is an intensive 3-day musical experience that offers each participant a place to grow musically in a fun and exciting learning environment. With carefully curated programs to nurture higher standards of music making, NPA2019 aims to create a community comprising of visiting professors, professional artistes, piano pedagogues and young pianists from around the region. The Academy provides opportunities for piano students to learn under renowned faculty members from overseas and Singapore.

For NPA2019, there will be three categories of participation:

 

Advanced Artist – the NPA brings serious young professionals, college piano majors and gifted young pianists together to further their professional development. This category aims to improve your abilities through individual lessons with visiting professors, masterclasses, talks, recitals and a competition. This category is limited to 40 places.

 

Aspiring Artist – this category is for pianists who aspire to study piano at the college or conservatory level. This program is catered to help you achieve your goals and provide an experience of the expectations and rigours of the study of piano performance. This category is limited to 40 places.

 

Observer – this is for those who wish to attend the talks, lectures, competitions, recitals and masterclasses taking place during the Nanyang Piano Academy. This category is limited to 80 places.

Academy Information

All students will be in classes, rehearsals, talks and masterclasses from 1000h each day, up to various times depending on the schedule. Lunch will be provided in the form of boxed meals. There will be some time allocated for group activities and games to facilitate bonding among participants.

 

Students will have the opportunity to perform in the NAFA Open House afternoon recitals, NPA Closing Concert, and participate in the inaugural NPA Competition.

Eligibility & Repertoire Preparation

The Nanyang Piano Academy 2019 is open to all piano enthusiasts.

  • The Advanced Artist category is open to pianists 28 years and below, subject to pre-screening results.
     

  • The Aspiring Artist category is open to pianists of all ages, subject to pre-screening results.
     

  • The Observer category is open to pianists of all ages.
     

  • Participants in the Advanced and Aspiring Artist categories should bring at least two pieces for study: one that is perfected and ‘performance ready’ and one that is in the refining stage.

Program Outline

Advanced Artist

  • Two 1-to-1 lessons (35-40 minutes) with visiting professors from Royal College of Music / University Mozarteum / The Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing) 

  • Attendance to all talks, lectures and masterclasses

  • Participation in Dalcroze Eurhythmic Workshop

  • Participation in Piano Academy performances

  • Participation in Piano Academy competition

  • At least 2 hours daily of allocated practice time on-site during the time of NPA 2019

Audition

Requirements

Each applicant (except applicants for the Observer Category) is required to submit an audition video of their performance for placement in the classes for the Academy.

 

For participants auditioning for the Advanced Artist Category, you are required to submit a recording of two contrasting works, with a duration of around 15 minutes. As for the Aspiring Artist Category, you are required to submit a recording of one work, with a duration of no more than 5 minutes.

 

Submission Details:

  1. Each piece must be uploaded as a separate file and labelled to indicate the performer, composer, title and movement. i.e. Therese Grob – W.A. Mozart’s Piano Sonata No 5 in G Major K.283 Movement 1.
     

  2. For consistency, each piece must be in an unedited recording performed in one sitting with same conditions e.g. grand piano, room. Audition videos should be submitted electronically via Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube or other accessible platforms online.

Payment & Refund

  • Application Fee must be paid together with submission of application forms and audition video links.
     

  • Participation Fee must be paid by 28 December 2018
     

  • Payment can be made via: credit card or cheque.
     

  • All participation fees include studio classes, piano practice studios (based on first-come-first-serve and studio availability), lectures, performances, masterclass observations, boxed lunches.
     

  • Should a situation arise where applicants are unable to attend the Academy, applicants are only eligible for a 50% refund of their Academy fees if applicants notify the Organizers through writing 15 days before the start of the Academy.
